Class: 1551 Basic Design (freshman level, pre-entry to the Graphic Design program)

Project: Creating Texture with Vinyl Lettering

*Note: this project has been adapted for the Basic Design class from Kenneth Fitzgerald‘s “Vinyl Letteror” project as described in Design for Communication by Elisabeth Resnick

Requirements:
  • Create an abstract composition derived from letterforms but which shows little or no remnant of their origin.
  • Each composition much demonstrate at least two design principles.
  • Use the materials to create actual and/or implied texture.
  • Make maximum use of the specific characteristics of vinyl letters: flexibility, dimensionality, directness, and the negative space of the sheet.
