Last fall my Pre-press Production class worked together to create a poster that would promote the LSU School of Art. LSU Printing Services was generous enough to donate printing for our project, and to give the students a tour of their facilities. I think it was a rewarding experience for the students to see their poster printed from the digital plates to the final product on a professional four color press. Thanks especially to Kenneth Watson, Steve Radcliffe and Mark Forstall for helping make this project a reality!

Freshman level, Spring 2009
Requirements: Create an abstract composition using only curved lines. The width of each line must be consistent from beginning to end. There is no restriction on how many curved lines are used to achieve your composition.

The 2009 AIGA New Orleans Portfolio Review will be held at The LITE Center in Lafayette, Louisiana on Saturday, March 28, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. The afternoon features a keynote presentation by New York artist, designer, and technologist Joshua Davis at LITE, a state-of-the-industry 3-D immersive visualization research facility located on the UL Lafayette campus.

Exercise (in class): Figure-Ground Reversals

Requirements:
Create a 4-inch square composition that shows figure-ground reversal. Use abstract shapes (non-representational) and fill the entire picture plane. Outline shapes with a technical pen and fill in larger areas with plaka, gouache or india ink.

Project: Creating Texture with Vinyl Lettering

*Note: this project has been adapted for the Basic Design class from Kenneth Fitzgerald‘s “Vinyl Letteror” project as described in Design for Communication by Elisabeth Resnick

Requirements:

Create an abstract composition derived from letterforms but which shows little or no remnant of their origin.
Each composition much demonstrate at least two design principles.
Use the materials to create actual and/or implied texture.
Make maximum use of the specific characteristics of vinyl letters: flexibility, dimensionality, directness, and the negative space of the sheet.
